About Japan GAA

Japan GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association)
Cumann Lúthchleas Gael na Seapaine

The Japan GAA is a non-profit, volunteer organisation founded in the Mid-90's devoted to promoting International friendship and understanding, primarily through participation in Gaelic Sport and Irish Culture, in Japan and throughout Asia. Our club does not have any borders. All are welcome, both young and not so young and our club consists of membership from several different countries, from Ireland, Japan, England, Scotland, US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada to name but a few.

As a club, our focal event every year is the Asian Gaelic Football Sevens. Each year 70-80 Japan GAA members pack their bags and head off in pursuit of the "Best in Asia" title. This year, the event will be held in Singapore on June 22nd, 24th. Representatives from more than 12 countries and cities, including Japan, China (Beijing, Shenzhen, Dalian and Shanghai), Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates (Dubai), South Korea and Vietnam will compete, with over 400 players, both male and female, expected to participate. This year, in addition, 25 Japan GAA members will make a trip in July to Taipei, Taiwan, in order to participate in a mini-tournament. The increasing numbers of these mini-tournaments shows the growing interest being generated in Gaelic Games in Asia.

In order to raise the profile of Gaelic football in Asia, the Japan GAA regularly organises Gaelic football clinics at Japanese Junior High Schools in conjunction with the Embassy of Ireland, Japan. Each May, Japan GAA makes a trip to Izumo, Shimane-Ken, helping to teach the local High-School Children about Irish Sports. The fact that we are being invited back each year, shows the success that we are having in spreading the GAA's influence throughout Japan and beyond.

Japan GAA is a significant contributor to, and participant in, many other global events throughout the year, including the Tokyo and Yokohama St. Patrick's Day parades and the annual Irish Sports Days in Seoul and Tokyo. These events, attended by thousands, ensure that the Japan GAA continues to enjoy a high profile in the realm of international culture and sport in Asia. Each year both our membership and our audience are growing.

If you would like to become a part of this exciting growth, please join us at one of our weekly training sessions at Futako Tamagawa. For more information please mail to address.

"I'd like to thank our kit sponsors "Luxury Trading" and other major sponsors "IFG Asia", "Guinness" and "Paddy Foleys Irish Bar" for their support.
